Book and History Talk: “A Cloud Over the Land”
November 12 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
Free

Join the Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library for a book talk with the historian of the Burt Lake Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians on Wednesday, November 12th, at 5:30 pm. Historian Deborah Richmond will discuss the tribe’s long-obscured history and a tragic chapter in Michigan’s history that has been kept hidden for over a century. On October 15, 1900, a Native American village at Burt Lake in Brutus, Michigan, was tragically razed to the ground, displacing families and stripping them of their ancestral lands and treaty rights. A Cloud Over the Land chronicles the events leading to this fateful day, detailing a series of actions that left the village in ruins.
Free and open to the public.
