The READ Adult Literacy Program provides FREE confidential tutoring to adults needing reading help, learning English as a second language (ESL), or studying for their GED.
The READ Adult Literacy program originally began in 1986 as a service unit of the Alpena County Library. Funding was at that time provided through the Department of Social Services.

When that funding ended, the library began to solely support the READ Program. It continued to provide office space within the library, materials, as well as a literacy coordinator.
Currently, the READ Adult Literacy Program is maintained and supported by two part-time coordinators; both of whom have post secondary degrees in the field of education.
